SHARING

SHARING is the ultimate reason for creating any text (written, video, image, performance). We create and edit texts so that others may read, view, discuss, analyze and enjoy them. Many of the tools we use to create texts can also be used to publish or share them with others. For example, we might create a document in Google Docs and then use the publishing feature to publish that document to the web.

Below are some of tools students and teachers can use to publish or share their texts.

HTML editors (Dreamweaver, FrontPage, SharePoint). HTML editors are used to create webpages. They offer the greatest flexibility but require more knowledge than working with a wiki site or Google Sites.

Google Sites is one of the Google applications that allows users to create their own web pages. It is a useful tool and simple to use but clearly has the Google stamp on it.

Wikis are another way for teachers and students to create and share content. There are many wiki sites available to educators. As you can see, we use PBWorks.

Youtube.  Youtube is a free video uploading and viewing site. It is enormously popular and has a wide variety of content. Some of that content is useful for education. Youtube is also a great way to share videos created by students.  Many schools block Youtube from the classroom, but there are sites that allow users to download and convert Youtube and other files so they can be stored on a USB thumb drive or other storage device. Zamzar is one of these sites. Users enter the Youtube URL into Zamzar, choose a file format, compile it and then after a few minutes (usally), get an email with a link to download the video to their computer or storage device.

Dipity, is a timelining tool available for free on the web. Students and teachers can create timelines of events past or present, upload photos or other picture files and write annotations or notes to go with entries. Dipity also allows for the creation of albums and flipbooks. A very cool site for educators and students.

There are a number of photo sharing sites on the web. These sites allow teachers and students to upload, edit, and share photos with others. Below is a list of a few of these sites:

Qollage is a digital collage tool that allows users to create information collages with text, images, and Youtube and other video images.

Friend feed is a social networking site, not unlike Facebook, that allows users to post information and form groups.
